What is anxiety?

Anxiety. What is it and do you experience it? Most of us at some point in our lives experience anxiety. Think the night before a big test; the night before a big date; meeting your future in-laws for the first time. So many of life’s big events evoke anxiety in us. That, however, is completely normal and expected. A lot hinges on these big events, no? Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life.

When anxiety goes awry, however, we are not able to manage those emotions and physical symptoms. Think heart racing, dry mouth, excessive sweating, or not being able to stop thinking about something. There are a number of disorders that fall under this category and can include panic attacks, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and several more. Folks experiencing an anxiety disorder have a hard time putting aside their worry and can be restless. Their levels of stress are often disproportionate to the event and this stress often takes over their life.

If worrying starts to impact how you lead your life, including your relationships, your work, the way you feel, or your mood then it is a good idea to seek professional help.
