You might have heard of EMDR. What is it?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It was created primarily for work with trauma as it helps to reprocess trauma.
EMDR involves the use of ‘bilateral stimulation’ (the most common of which is tracking something with your eyes) to activate the left and right brain to help the brain reprocess the trauma memory in a way that reduces the distress of the memory.
In addition to trauma, EMDR has been shown to be helpful in treating anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and self-esteem. EMDR can be used in conjunction with traditional counseling tools. You can learn more about EMDR by visiting the EMDR International Association.
